Unbelievable & Creepy: Families Dig up Dead Relatives & Redress Them for Reunion

Families gathered to raise their dead loved ones from their tombs and clean and re-dress the corpses in a ritual honouring the spirits of their mummified ancestors in Indonesia.


Every August the Torja community in Panggala, Nort Toraja, South Sulawesi, re-dress their relatives' bodies, clean them, speak with them and even light them cigarettes. 


The Toraja Death Rituals are considered the biggest celebration of life by people who believe the link between life and death is infinite. The tradition is entrenched in the Toraja people's culture even though they are actually a largely Protestant Christian community in a Muslim-majority country. 


When loved ones die families keep their bodies for months, sometimes years, in their own homes or in  a 'Tongkonan' which is a specific building designed to house the dead. While families mourn, prepare for burials and save for the funeral they often interact with the bodies as if they were alive by talking to them and including them in family meals. 


The Torjan community consider death to be the most important aspect of life and often get into crippling debt from paying for funerals. The annual visit to their loved ones is considered a second funeral where they also clean or replace coffins to prevent the bodies from decomposing. After relatives have spent time with the dead and re-dressed their bodies and coffins they are usually reinterred with gifts in their ornate, colourful coffins. 


Head of the Torajan branch of AMAN Eric Crystal Rante Allo last year told The Sydney Morning Herald while it might seem strange to outsiders, it is a key part of the culture. 'Toraja people believe the spirit of the dead lives among us, the living, looking out for us, blessing us,' he said. 'That's why, before the ritual of the burial is performed, they are called to'makula, or just sick, not yet dead. Toraja's people highly respect their dead.'

Auto crash claims 14 lives in Zamfara, many injure

No fewer than fourteen politicians have died in a fatal road accident along Gusau – Zaria road while some politicians were allegedly rushing to meet up with the state Governor’s convoy.

The accident which occurred on Wednesday saw three vehicles colliding with a BUA cement trailer.

It was gathered that fourteen of the politicians died on the spot, while several politicians sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the incident, saying that those who sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital and responding fine to treatment.

However, Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle has condoled the families of all the deceased persons who lost their lives in the accident.

The Governor ordered a three-day mourning in honour of the departed souls, saying that all flags should fly at half-mast.

This was contained in a press system signed and made available to newsmen in Gusau, the state capital by the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Public enlightenment, Mr. Zailani Bappa

The deceased have since been accorded befitting burials attended by hundreds of people.

It could be recalled that some politicians in the state had gone to receive the Governor at the border between Zamfara and Katsina States where the three vehicles collided with BUA cement trailer along Gusau- Zaria road.

Don’t panic, it’s not death sentence, WAEC tells candidates with COVID-19

Mr Patrick Areghan, Head, West African Examination Council (WAEC), has called on candidates infected with the COVID-19 writing the ongoing examinations not to panic saying “the virus is not a death sentence”.

Areghan, who made this known on Wednesday at the end of a monitoring visit to Federal Government Boys College, Apo, Abuja said that no student infected with COVID-19 would miss the examinations.

“I want to assure you and the Nigerians that anywhere we have COVID-19 candidate, we make sure that he or she writes the examinations. It is not a death sentence, there is no stigma.

“We don’t want anybody to miss the exams. It’s no fault of theirs. We can defeat this disease provided we take first-line responsibility,” he said.

The WAEC Head of National Office in Nigeria said that the council had been collaborating with various states ministry of education to look out for candidates infected with the virus.

According to him, when it happens, the ministry of education and the ministry of health in the state will have to come together and get a medical expert that will conduct the exam for the candidate.

Areghan said that such a candidate would write the examinations in the isolation centre.

He added that the council would thereafter go to the isolation centre and collect the script which would be put in a special bank designated for the purpose.

“Yesterday we heard stories about some candidates contracting the disease in one state, we quickly got in touch with our officer and he said he was not aware.

“We ask him to get in touch with the commission and the commission said that there was nothing like that.

“Yes we are aware that in Gombe, there was one candidate who wrote the examinations for about two days or so and I learnt that the candidate had been discharged from the isolation center,” he said.

According to him, the council also heard about one in Kwara and then in Bayelsa, they also carried out massive testing before the commencement of the examination.

“The results have just come out and that the candidates infected have been isolated and we are conducting the examination for them.

“I want to assure you and the Nigerians that anywhere we have COVID-19 candidate, we make sure that he or she writes the examination. It is not a death sentence, there is no stigma,” he said.

On alleged leaked examinations papers, Areghan denied the rumours saying there was no element of truth in it.

“As I speak with you, no single examination paper was leaked. WAEC does not experience anything called leakage anymore since 1977.

“What has been happening is that some so called supervisors who the Ministry of Education repose confidence in selecting men and women of integrity and send them to us to be engaged as supervisor,’’ he said

He added that some mischievous supervisors opened the questions, snap it and post it into designated WhatsApp groups for the benefit of their collaborators.

According to him, these are the supervisors that are the bad eggs in the system and all hands must be on deck to fetch them out.

He, therefore, commended the students for taking into cognisance the COVID-19 protocols during the examination.

Also, Mr Hussain Adbullahi, Principal Federal Government Boys College Apo, said that the students are complying with the protocols through washing of hands, sanitising and checking their temperature.

He called on the Ministry of Education to ensure that those sent for examination supervisor are people of integrity.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned parents against sending their children to schools in Northern Cyprus.

This follows several incessant and mysterious killing of Nigerians in the country.

Dabiri-Erewa stated this on Monday when she received a delegation at her office, led by Justice Amina Bello, mother of a Nigerian student, Ibrahim Khaleel, who was allegedly killed in that country.

She called on parents to be weary of sending their wards to Northern Cyprus as the country is not recognized by the United Nations except the Republic of Turkey, adding that Nigeria has no diplomatic ties with that country.

The NIDCOM boss, however, insisted that the country should be blacklisted given the preponderance of Nigerian students who have died mysteriously in that country without any prosecution or compensation whatsoever.

“The time has come for us to blacklist all these Universities in Northern Cyprus and advise our students from seeking any form of admission there as it portends danger to their life and future”.

*DEATH OF IBRAHIM KHALEEL BELLO: NIDCOM DEMANDS JUSTICE, URGES STUDENTS TO AVOID NORTHERN CYPRUS UNIVERSITIES

Abuja, Aug. 24, 2020 .
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has demanded that justice must be served accordingly on the sudden death of a 25-year old Nigerian student in Northern Cyprus, Mr Ibrahim Khaleel Bello and others killed in such mysterious circumstances in the country.

She made this passionate plea following a petition by Hon. Justice Amina Ahmad Bello, a Judge in Kaduna state High Court on the mysterious and , inexplicable death of her son, a third-year civil Engineering Degree student of Girne American University in Girne (Kyrenia), Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ( TRNC) via Mersin 10, Turkey in Abuja on Monday.

Dabiri-Erewa called on parents to be weary of sending their wards to Northern Cyprus as the country is not recognized by the United Nations except the Republic of Turkey, adding that Nigeria has no diplomatic ties with that country.

She insisted that the Country should be blacklisted given the preponderance of Nigerian Students who have died mysteriously in that country without any prosecution or compensation whatsoever.

She assured the delegation led by Justice Bello, that NIDCOM will work with the Ministry of Justice, Nigerian Mission in Turkey and other relevant agencies to ensure justice is done , saying “ the death of Ibrahim khaleel Bello should be a tipping point to end the continuous killings of Nigerian students in that Country.”

Dabiri-Erewa reiterated her appeals to Nigerian parents to desist in sending their children to Northern Cyprus for any studies as most of the courses are not accredited and they end up killing the children., many of them unreported .

” The time has come for us to blacklist all these Universities in Northern Cyprus and advise our students from seeking any form of admission there as it portends danger to their life and future”, she said.

She added that the office of the Attorney General of the Federation has already reported the matter to Interpol for further investigation.

Earlier in an emotion-laden voice, Justice Amina Ahmad Bello, mother of the deceased, said her insistence on justice was not only for her son but also other Nigerian Students who have died mysteriously in the Girne American University Girne (Kyrenia), and other Universities in Northern Cyprus.

She narrated how her son was allegedly murdered and covered up by the authorities in Northern Cyprus as welll as the University authorities claiming it was a suicide mission having fallen from a seven-storey building.

She insisted that the report be investigated and all those found culpable be prosecuted as there was nothing to show that her son committed suicide.

Justice Bello said hours before her son was killed, she spoke with him, and he was expressing fears on his safety in the University environment.

” I don’t believe it was an accident or a suicide as I went to Cyprus barely 24 hours it happened and got to the mortuary where there was no scratch or wound on his body.

” I suspected foul play that my son was killed as the school was non- challant in breaking the news to me on my arrival there”

Justice Bello said hours before the boy died, he sent her a WhatsApp message that ” Mama, Please I want to come back home. Wallahi if i stay here, I will just die here without anybody batting an eyelash. I just need to come back home. Mama please try to understand that this isn’t a place for me”.

She alleged that it is possible some of the killed Nigerian students’ vital organs were harvested as her son’s stomach was opened and sutured when the corpse was finally released.

The late Ibrahim Khaleel Bello was among about 100 Nigerians killed and murdered in mysterious circumstances from 2016 to 2020 without prosecuting any of the assailants.

Other victims include, Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede, 28, student of Eastern Mediterranean University and was killed on Feb. 1, 2018, Walshak Augustine Ngok, a student of Marine Engineering at Near East University, murdered on April 19, 2019.

Others were Gabriel Soriwei, a first-year student of Electrical Electronics of Cyprus International University, Nicosia, Osabanjo Adeola Owoyale, 33, went missing and found dead on July 1, 2019.

The list includes Augustine Wallies killed on April 19, 2019, Stanley Eteimo, 28 years, Hassan Babatunde, 28, murdered, Temitayo Adigun, killed, Kubiat Abasi Abraham Okon, 24, killed, Oziegbe Gospower Airekugose and Olasubomi Ope among others not reported.

Drama as UNILAG Senate meets to nominate acting VC

A mild drama ensued on Monday as some Senate members of the University of Lagos , who were to meet to nominate an acting Vice - Chancellor at the main auditorium were initially barred by a memo posted on the door of the auditorium .

The memo , signed by the Registrar, Oladejo Azeez , stated in part , “ This is to inform all Senate members that no meeting of the Senate has been summoned , members should await proper notice of meeting after the Federal Government of Nigeria has clarified some issues germane to the meeting .”

However, after a while, some workers opened the door to the main auditorium for the Senate members .

The members are currently at the meeting while members of staff are seen lingering around the environment , awaiting the outcome of the meeting .
