BREAKING NEWS In Nigeria For This Night, October 31, 2020

Nigeria's Federal Character laws should be amended - Gbajabiamila.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called for a review of extant federal character laws.

He spoke on Saturday in Abuja at the Young Parliamentarians Forum National Strategy Meeting and Retreat.

Gbaja said as presently defined in the constitution, the federal character is at variance with the nation’s realities as it limits opportunities to geographical location.

The lawmaker said the existing provisions did not consider gender, persons living with disabilities and age classification.

He urged young legislators to chart a course that would push the youths to take the mantle of leadership at all levels of government.

President Trump reacts as US Forces rescue American in Nigeria.

US president, Donald Trump, has hailed the “courageous soldiers” who rescued an American hostage in Nigeria on Saturday.

Philip Walton, 27, was seized by armed bandits on Monday, October 26.

Walton was moved to a location in northern Nigeria where he was held.

The Pentagon has confirmed that the operation was executed on Saturday.

Trump tweeted: “Last night, our country’s brave warriors rescued an American hostage in Nigeria.

“Our Nation salutes the courageous soldiers behind the daring nighttime rescue operation and celebrates the safe return of yet another American citizen!”

‘An IGP wept, another destroyed his phone over interference by politicians’.

Inspector-General of Police cried out of frustration over the problems of the Nigeria Police Force, while another threw his phone at the wall out of anger at the constant interference by politicians.

These were some revelations by retired Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, who served as the police imagemaker at the Force headquarters, Abuja, under five Inspectors-General of Police.

Speaking during an interview with Vanguard, he said serving as Force PRO under five IGP gave him an insight into the problems bedeviling the Police.

According to Emmanuel Ojukwu, the issues with the Force makes it “kill its best”.

Ojukwu said: “I have seen an Inspector-General of Police weep over the problems of Nigerian police. I have seen another Inspector-General of Police display temper, anger by throwing away his phone over persistent calls and disturbance from the National Assembly.

“When the head is frustrated, the system is frustrated.

Expressing the State Government’s appreciation to Deltans for observing the curfew, which was aimed at restoring normalcy in the state, Aniagwu in the statement, said: “As a government we are not unmindful of the stress our people are going through on account of the curfew, but it was inevitable in order to protect the life and property of Deltans.
“I must thank Deltans for protecting the interest of our common patrimony by ensuring that no further destruction of public buildings was witnessed in the state.
“As part of our avowed commitment to build a stronger Delta with our youths, let me also express the determination of the State Government to give effect to the decisions reached in the Town Hall meetings with youths in the state”.
Recall that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had imposed a 48-hour curfew on the state on Thursday October 22 following wanton destruction of public buildings in parts of the state during the #ENDSARS protests, which he relaxed on Saturday, October 24 from 6pm to 8am daily

Court declines to order INTERPOL arrest of ex-Petroleum Minister, Diezani

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Wednesday, refused an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for an arrest warrant to be issued with an order directing the INTERPOL to immediately arrest the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the United Kingdom.

EFCC said its investigations revealed that the ex-Minister who is facing several money laundering allegations, has remained in her hideout in UK and refused to return to the country to enter her plea to charges against her.

At the resumed proceedings in one of the cases against her, counsel to the anti-graft agency, Mr. Farouk Abdullah, noted that the court had on July 24, summoned the erstwhile Petroleum Minister to appear for her arraignment.

Abdullah said the agency complied with directive of the court for the summon to be conspicuously published on EFCC’s website and in one national daily.

He said the Commission had upon fulfilling the Court’s order, filed an affidavit of compliance on October 8.

The prosecution counsel, however, noted that the ex-Minister spurned the summon by her failure to appear before the court on Wednesday to enter her plea to the money laundering charge against her.

He, therefore, pleaded the court to not only issue a warrant of arrest, but to further direct the INTERPOL to arrest her in the UK.

“My lord, this honourable court issued a summon for the defendant to appear today but the defendant has failed to appear.

“Giving the aforesaid fact, I apply that a warrant of arrest be issued against the defendant pursuant to Section 83(1b) of the ACJA 2015.

“We urge the court, in making the order, to direct all law enforcement agencies and the INTERPOL to arrest the defendant anywhere she is sighted and be brought before the court to answer to the allegation made against her before this honourable court”, EFCC’s lawyer added.

He said the Commission was equally liaising with the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to get in touch with any country that may be hosting the Defendant so as to extradite her back to the country, in line with Extradition Act and General Convention of Nations.

Abdullah contended that since the summon did not achieve the desired result, there was need for a warrant of arrest to be issued against the Defendant.

However, trial Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu declined the request on the premise that EFCC must firstly file an affidavit evidence to prove that the earlier summon that was issued by the court failed.

Justice Ojukwu also noted that the EFCC informed the court that the office of the AGF was making effort to secure a warrant of arrest to enable the INTERPOL arrest the ex-Minister with a view to extraditing her to the country to answer to charges against her.

Consequently, the judge said the court would give the prosecution the room to put its house in order in the trial of the ex-Minister.

Noting that court orders are not made in vain, Justice Ojukwu held: “I have carefully perused the application of the prosecution. The earlier order of this court was made pursuant to Section 831 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

“It is my view that the summon should have assisted in the extradition of the Defendant by the Office of the AGF.

“Today, the Defendant is not in court and no reason was giving. I am being informed that the defendant is believed to be in the United Kingdom (UK).

“The learned counsel also informed the court that the extradition process has failed as a result of the absence of the warrant of arrest.

“But if that is the case, learned counsel shall file an affidavit to that effect supported by evidence from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

“I hereby give you time to put your house in order”.
The case was subsequently adjourned till December 3 for report and arraignment of the Defendant.

EFCC had told the court that investigations revealed that the former Petroleum Minister was not only deeply involved in money laundering, but equally played key roles in other financial crimes.

It decried that since the ex-Minister fled the country immediately she exited office, it has been difficult to get her back to respond to different criminal allegations against her.

In one of the documents it filed before the court, EFCC, said Diezani was among other things, wanted over alleged role she played in the award of Strategic Alliance Agreement (SAA) to; Septa Energy Limited, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Limited and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited by NNPC.

As well as to answer questions on her role in the chartering of private jets by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and Ministry of Petroleum Resources and her role in the award of contracts by NNPC to Marine and Logistics Services Limited.

Besides, the agency said it is currently investigating the nature of business relationships the former Minister had with some persons.

It listed some of Diezani’s alleged allies under investigation as Mr. Donald Amamgbo, Mr. lgho Sanomi, Mr. Afam Nwokedi, Chief lkpea Leemon, Miss Olatimbo Bukola Ayinde, Mr. Benedict Peters, Christopher Aire, Harcourt Adukeh, Julian Osula, Dauda Lawal, Nnamdi Okonkwo, Mr. Leno Laithan, Sahara Energy Group and Midwestern Oil Limited.

The EFCC said it wanted the ex-Minister to speak on several items, documents and jewelleries that were recovered from her house at No: 10 Chiluba Close off Jose Marti Street, Asokoro, Abuja, and some identified properties that are linked to her In Nigeria, UK, United States of America (USA), United Arab Emirate (UAE) and South Africa.

More so, the Commission told the court that it would also require Diezani to explain her role in financing the 2015 general elections, particularly the money that were warehoused at Fidelity Bank Plc in 2015, prior to the elections.

#EndSARS protests: Victims of Lekki toll-gate shooting should come forward — Panel

THE Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS related abuses and the Lekki Tollgate Incident, yesterday, urged victims of the October 20 shooting of #EndSARS protesters by Army personnel to come forward with their petitions.

This came on a day a member of the panel, Mr. Ebun-olu Adegboruwa, SAN, said that the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, may have tampered with exhibits at the scene of the Lekki shooting in Lagos State

Similarly, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, yesterday, condemned the killings of some youths at Lekki toll gate during the protest against police brutality.

Chairperson of the panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi (retd), who spoke during the panel’s sitting, said that the judicial panel had so far received 15 petitions from abused victims of the disbanded SARS.

Okuwobi said that the panel is independent of the Lagos State Government and will ensure that individuals with valid complaints of human rights violations will receive immediate compensation.

She said: “If their cases are disposed off in a month or two, compensation, if recommended, should go to the victims immediately to assuage their pains.

“We are looking forward to memoranda from those affected by the unfortunate incident of the shooting at the Lekki Tollgate plaza by the military.

“The panel has received not less than 15 petitions relating to the disbanded SARS.

“We are indeed ready to commence the public sitting. The petitions are here without the petitioners around, the panel will start full proceedings tomorrow (Oct. 27).

“We are relying on the civil society to assist the panel with credible evidence of the killings at the Lekki Tollgate Plaza.

“This is to ensure that there will be good evidence to assist the panel make appropriate recommendations in respect of all terms of reference of the panel.”

Lagos Assembly sets up Ad-hoc c’ttee on damages

On its part, the Lagos State House of Assembly, yesterday, set up an Ad-Hoc Committee to ascertain the level of damage and offer suggestions.

The House also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intensify the move for the creation of state police.

Members of the Committee are Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Sanni-Eshinlokun, Abiodun Tobun, Rotimi Olowo, Ajani Owolabi, Ganiyu Okanlawon, Victor Akande, Rasheed Makinde, Ibrahim Layode and Akeem Shokunle.

The House had embarked on an inspection tour of the scenes of the carnage which include the Lagos High Court, BRT Oyingbo Terminal, Fagba, Isokoko and Pen Cinema Police Stations, Oba Akiolu’s Palace, City Hall and Public Works Corporation.

While debating on the issue, members took turns to condemn the carnage and death of the protesters at the Lekki Tollgate.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, who commiserated with victims of the looting and vandalisation, urged Lagosians to protect their properties.

He said: “The events that have taken over our state and by extension Nigeria within the past two weeks regarding the #EndSARS protests and its aftermath are such that call for concerns in their entirety.

“The Lagos House of Assembly was the first in the nation to identify with the cause of the youths asking for an end to police brutality in the nation and we threw our weight behind the movement.”

Fashola illegally tampered with exhibits—Adegboruwa

Similarly, a member of the panel, Mr. Adegboruwa, faulted Mr. Fashola saying he may have tampered with exhibits at the scene of the Lekki shooting in Lagos State.

On Sunday, Fashola was said to have found a camera while on a tour of the tollgate where #EndSARS protesters demonstrated for 13 days before they were forcefully dispersed.

In a statement, Adegboruwa said: “Since the panel has been vested with jurisdiction over the Lekki toll plaza, I verily believe that it is illegal for anyone else to conduct any visit to the said Lekki toll plaza in the absence of and without the authority and consent of the panel.

“It was reported that in the course of the visit, the former governor of Lagos State and the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), discovered a hidden camera, which he took. This is a clear case of illegally tampering with exhibits that may become useful to the panel in the course of its assignment.

“I appeal to the Governor of Lagos State to allow the panel the full autonomy and independence that was promised at the time of inauguration. It is contempt of the panel for anyone to usurp the powers of the panel in the way that has been reported.”

Dismantle Lekki toll gates —Bode George

Meanwhile, a PDP chieftain, Chief George said that the protest was a result of a failed system where structures of power are hindering merit and excellence.

Speaking at a press conference, George said: “Our ethos and norms have broken down. It is this very anomaly which is much pronounced in Lagos state than any other part of our nation that galvanized the ENDSARS protests.

He, however, recommended that the two Toll gates at Lekki should be dismantled saying it remains a sacred ground where innocent lives were cut short abruptly.

He said: “At the Admiralty Circle Tollgate specifically where bullets rained on that black Tuesday 20- 10-2020, a monument should be erected as a permanent memorial to honor the young men and women who stood up in peaceful protests against the ills in our society.

“I have chosen to talk. I have chosen to identify with the voiceless, the helpless, the trampled, the hapless, the selfless members of the armed forces and the police. But I do not speak with any partisan badge. I speak as a Nigerian patriot. I speak as an Elder Statesman. I speak as the AtÍna Odua of Yorubaland. I speak as a Lagosian original.”

BREAKING: Adeboye declares 30-day fasting and prayer over situations in Nigeria

Apparently worried by the current situations in Nigeria, General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Tuesday declared a 30-day fasting and prayer across the country.

Nigeria has in the past week been embroiled in a series of crises which started with the protest against police brutality now widely known as #EndSARS protest and also the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20.

However, based on the situation in the country, the RCCG General Overseer has directed that its members and the entire country should embark on 30-day fasting and prayer which is expected to begin on Sunday, November 1.

According to a statement by Pastor J.O. Odesola, the Assistant General Overseer in charge of Administration and Personnel on behalf of Pastor Adeboye, the prayer is to hold from November 1 to November 30 from midnight to 6.00 p.m. daily while the marathon fasting is to hold from November 1 to November 14.

1) I don’t mind if I live the rest of my life in Nigeria – Army chief, Buratai, waves off threat of visa ban

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai on Monday said that some “criminal elements” were threatening military officers with travel ban over the EndSARS protest.

Falana, who insisted that the soldiers were deployed to the demonstration ground last Tuesday, said: “We have already identified the barracks where the soldiers left for Lekki, we have already identified the barracks.”

He, however, did not reveal the details of the barracks.

“The President was likely to have been told soldiers were ordered so I want to believe that’s why it was not addressed. They said it was a rumour but I think the facts are emerging now, that indeed soldiers went to Lekki, indeed they fired at protesters and indeed some of the protesters at least two have been officially acknowledged to have died from gunshot wounds”, he said.

6) Lekki: FFK Reveals When Toll Gate Shooting Will Be Exposed

Former Nigeria Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that the truth behind the Lekki tollgate massacre will remain unexposed until President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure end in 2023.

FFK stated this in a thread of tweet on his verified Twitter account on Monday, October 26, while reacting to the discovery of a secret camera at the Lekki tollgate by Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing.

According to him, ‘until Buhari is out of office before those involved will be bundled to the ICC at the Hague for crimes against humanity.’

He tweeted; “Why would a Minister remove a camera from the crime scene of the biggest mass murder in our history? If the camera was planted by Govt. they will show us what they want us to see. If the camera was not planted & provides evidence of genocide it will be doctored or destroyed & the deep state is at work here but we cannot be fooled. It is only after PMB leaves office that the truth about what happened at the Lekki Tollgate will be exposed. After that, he & all those that were involved will be bundled to the ICC at the Hague for crimes against humanity.

Good News For #EndSARS Protesters: See What Buhari Has Ordered To Be Done About The Lekki Shootings

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020, will never be forgotten in a hurry in the history of Nigerians, a day the Nigerian Army opened fire on its own citizens who were singing the national anthem and hoisting the national flag. The massacre at Lekki Toll Gate that night remains one of the most heartbreaking conspiracies ever witnessed in any country.

The attack on the peaceful and innocent protesters immediately attracted condemnation from the international community. All over the world, notable figures and organizations lent their voices and condemned the attacks

As the protesters wallowed in their pains and injuries, their hope was that the government would do them justice by ordering a probe into the shootings. The following day, the hopes of the protesters were dampened when the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while addressing the Lekki shootings, said that forces beyond the control of the state were responsible for the shootings. Though he promised to get in touch with the president and get to the bottom of the issue.

Photos of Governor while on a visit to the injured protesters at different hospitals:

Another ray of hope came for the protesters two days ago when it was announced that the president, Muhammadu Buhari, would finally address the nation. The public hoped that he would hit the nail on the head of the Lekki massacre, but unfortunately, throughout the 12 minutes speech of Mr President, he did not say anything about the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate. And at that point, the hope of the protesters getting justice seemed to have been lost.

But yesterday, that hope for justice came alive again when the protesters received the good news that President Buhari has ordered for a probe into the Lekki shootings.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, said this during an interview with Arise TV yesterday.

Photos of Sunday Dare:

The Minister was asked why the president did not talk about the Lekki massacre during his address on the #EndSARS protest, and he made it clear to the public that the president has ordered for a probe into the shootings, and that he will speak on it after the outcome of the probe.

He said that of course, the president has ordered for an investigation into the matter, and that he had a national security meeting two days ago. He said the reason the president did not mention the Lekki massacre during his address was because he wants to get his facts first, and after that he will address it. And that investigation is now ongoing, and everything will be made public when it is concluded.

He added that it is difficult to hide facts, especially now that we live in a multimedia world, and that is the path the president has chosen to take. He added that the president is a man of integrity, and when the facts are made available, he will let the public know about what really happened at Lekki Toll Gate on that Tuesday night.

Another good news is that, he gave another assurance that the federal government has accepted the demands of the protesters. He said that before we had been hearing about the scrapping of SARS which was actually lips service, but this time around, for the first time, we heard it directly from the President that SARS has been scrapped, which was also followed by the Inspector General of Police.

He also confirmed that the whole five points demands of the youths were fully accepted by the President, and that he has set up a process.

That is indeed good news. Even though the protest had later turned violent, which wasn't part of the intention of it, there is some consolation in the fact that the efforts were not wasted. The people who lost their lives during this struggle didn't die in vain, because the aims of the protest have been achieved.

What do you think about the overall outcome of this protest? Do you think the protest actually achieved its aim? And what do you think about this assurance from the Minister that President Buhari has ordered for a probe into the Lekki massacre? Do you think anything positive will come out of the probe? Let's hear you out in the comments section below.
